Women in Service: Honoring Female Veterans

March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women throughout history. This includes the brave and dedicated female veterans who have served in our armed forces, often overcoming immense challenges to pave the way for future generations. At Project One Vet @ a Time (POVAT), we honor these trailblazers by advocating for their rights, ensuring they receive the support they deserve, and partnering with organizations like Shield of Sisters to provide essential resources.

A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

Women have played a crucial role in the military for centuries. From Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War, to Harriet M. Waddy and Charity Adams Earley, who led the way for Black women in the Army during World War II, female veterans have continuously shattered barriers. Today, women serve in every branch of the military, taking on roles as pilots, commanders, medics, and frontline warriors.

Yet, despite their service, female veterans often face unique challenges upon transitioning to civilian life. Many struggle with recognition of their service, accessing VA benefits, and mental health concerns, including PTSD and military sexual trauma (MST). POVAT is committed to helping female veterans navigate these obstacles and secure the support they rightfully deserve.

The Role of POVAT in Supporting Female Veterans

At POVAT, we understand that transitioning from military to civilian life comes with a unique set of difficulties. Our mission is to help veterans—including the growing number of women in the military—fight for their appropriate VA ratings, access healthcare, and find resources to help them thrive.

Through our work, we’ve seen firsthand the resilience and strength of female veterans, but we also recognize the barriers they face, such as:

Partnering with Shield of Sisters

To further our commitment to female veterans, POVAT proudly partners with Shield of Sisters, an organization dedicated to helping female veterans and first responders heal from trauma, rebuild their lives, and regain confidence. Shield of Sisters provides:

  • Healing retreats for survivors of MST and domestic violence.
  • Workshops and resources to help women regain a sense of purpose and empowerment.
  • A strong, supportive community of women who understand their unique struggles and are there to uplift one another.

Together, POVAT and Shield of Sisters are ensuring women who have served are not forgotten and they receive the respect, recognition, and care they have earned.

Honoring Female Veterans This Women’s History Month

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the courageous women who have served in our armed forces. Their stories, sacrifices, and contributions deserve to be recognized not just in March, but year-round.
